What was the sample size of the survey?
I cannot believe the ITR result - the worst place on earth at the moment!
This is an interesting snap shot. I would like to read some of the comments behind the scores as well as how many people voted for each department. What was it that made a department score low against one that was higher?
The only reason I can fathom as to the DITR result is the number of new people from DEWR.
DITR has a great bunch of people! Management organisation is up in the air though.
Need to know where people have worked, and the numbers for each site. Would also love to see the raw comments
I have to agree with the ITR comments. At the moment it is not a good place to work.
DITR has lost 30% of their IT staff since late last year. An interesting definition of "great place to work!"
We've have several escapee's working here. Sounds like a very nasty place to work.
The DITR result just reinforces the old saying, "Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics". Don't believe everything you read....apart from the DITR comments listed here.
The results look sensible to me. I've worked at DEWR, ATO and DEST in recent years. DEWR and ATO are both appalling Departments to work for, though ATO is easily the worst of the two. DEST are good. We have escapees from DITR here who say it is pretty bad, but maybe their good rating comes from escapees from DEWR who think DITR are good in comparison.
So for those out there who have worked for these Departments, which is the worst. I am moving over and it would be handy to know which departments to be wary of. Can I just say that they can't be any worse than the DWP - Department for Work and Pensions UK.
In my experience the ATO are the worst. Long hours, crap working environment, big bureaucracy, never using the latest technology. But worst is they way they treat contractors. Over recent years hundreds of contractors have been terminated early when ATO ran into budget problems. I was terminated with three days notice just two months into a twelve month contract at ATO because they were over budget. I was one of over 90 contractors terminated at that time, and that kind of arbitary cull has been repeated a number of times since then. DEWR work you long hours, but at least you are always working on the latest technology, and I've not known them to sack scores of contractors at a time because they couldn't manage their budget. If you are single and/or are prepared to work long hours they would be good to work for. But beware, In my time with them I was working to between 1:00am and 3:00am twice every week, as well as lots of other evening and weekend work. DEST are great. They are far smaller than ATO and DEWR, so there isn't as many opportunities to join them, but you have much more say in the running of your projects and it is just a much better place to be.
I think the most interesting element in the equation is that the two biggest IT shops in government are right down the bottom, and three of the smaller IT shops are at the top. Perhaps size really does matter.
I'm at FaCS, and whilst they're extremely disorganised and well behind emerging technologies, it's not as bad as this survey would suggest. Anyone else had bad experiences? Also, I noticed ABS isn't in here. Anyone have comments about the ABS?
I am surprise that Centreink is better than ATO and DEWR in the list. In terms of terminate contractors, Centrelink do the same when they are over budget. One of the worst thing they do is the marking testing (other depts do that too but may be not as many?). A lot of jobs are not 'real' job, why bother, waster time on both side. May be not wasting too much of the department staff's time because I know they sometimes not even look at the application if the job not 'real'. The other thing is the selection criteria, even more annoying than market testing. Resume has all the employment history, clearly state the experience and date...etc. Please consider the applicant as well.
The response has been excellent guys. I will post updated stats for the department survey very soon.
In the meantime check out the new agency survey...
